Fitting Guide
What you need
- A Microwave
- A microwave-safe plate
- A wet paper towel
- A bowl of cold water
Wrap the mouthguard
Roll a portion of the wet paper towel and place it between the two side walls of the mouthguard to prevent collapse. Wrap the mouthguard in the remaining wet paper towel.
Heat the mouthguard
Place the mouthguard on the microwave-safe plate and heat it in the microwave using the standard heating setting:
- 900+ watt microwave: 70 seconds
- Below 900 watt microwave: 80 seconds
Important: Do not heat for longer than 80 seconds; if you are unsure of the microwave wattage, start with 70 seconds. If the mouthguard is not yet soft after heating, heat again for an additional 10 seconds.
Remove the mouthguard
Carefully remove the wrapped mouthguard and ensure that the softened sides do not collapse.
Caution: The paper towel is hot; the mouthguard is warm – handle with care. The material should feel like chewing gum or modeling clay. If not, the mouthguard may need to be reheated briefly.
Fit the mouthguard
Center the mouthguard and place it onto the upper teeth.
Before biting down:
- Place the thumbs on the inner side and the index fingers on the outer side of the mouthguard (put thumbs and index fingers in a pinching position).
- Press firmly from the outside and inside against the material so that it adapts to the shape of the teeth.
- Work from front to back to achieve the best fit.
Optimize the fit
While gently biting down:
- Hold the mouthguard firmly with your fingers.
- Close your mouth and suck your lips tightly against the mouthguard.
- Ensure a strong suction: continue pressing with your fingers on the lips and the closed mouth to improve the dental impressions in the material.
- Perform this for 1 minute and 30 seconds to form a good impression.
Cool Mouthguard
Place the mouthguard in the bowl of cold water for 30 seconds. If the fit is not yet optimal, return to step 1 and repeat the process.
Fitting using boiling water
If a microwave is not available, steps 1-3 may be replaced by the following steps:
- Boil water: Fill a pot with at least 25 cm (4 inches) of water and bring it to a boil.
- Soften the mouthguard: Remove the boiling water from the heat source. Submerge the mouthguard for 80 seconds.
- Remove with a spoon: Use a spoon to carefully lift the mouthguard out of the water. Hold it by the sides and shake off excess water.
Then follow steps 4-6 as described above to fit the mouthguard.
Notes
The material will fully harden after approximately 24 hours, providing an even more secure fit.
The mouthguard does not need to be refitted before each use.
The mouthguard can be refitted multiple times.
For users with orthodontic appliances: Do not press on brackets or wires or create suction with the lips if you are wearing braces. The material will naturally form around the brackets or wires. It is essential to consult a dental professional before use with orthodontic appliances to ensure compatibility and safety.
